Bhadra Fort

Bhadra Fort is one of the worth visiting places of the city where the republic day celebration is a popular event organized every year on January 26th. The fort has derived its name from the Mother Goddess Bhadrakali whose temple is also present inside the fort. One can climb to the roof of the fort for viewing the panorama of the city.

The fort once encompassed 12 gates, 189 bastions and 6000 battlements. Adjacent to the fort, it is the Azam Khan serai that reflects the Mughal architecture.

Teen Darwaza or Tripple Gate is a place which was used for the purpose of royal entrance to the Royal Square of the Bhadra Fort. From atop the gate, the emperor Jehangir used to watch the colourful processing going from the palace to the nearby Jama Masjid. The gate has strong bastions and finely carved designs which are creative and beautiful. The road towards the Teen Darwaza is lined with shops selling block prints, silverwares and other handy-craft items.

Tomb of Ahmed Shah

The tomb of Ahmed Shah is close to the Jewellery Bazaar in Manek Chowk situated just outside the east entrance of the Jama Masjid. This tomb has amazing ceilings and lattice works with elegant pillared verandahs where the Sultan, his son and grandson are buried.

This prudent colony of tiled houses was once the second home to the father of the nation – Mahatma Gandhi. It was the place where Gandhiji had started his final struggle for India’s freedom. His cottage “Hriday Kunj” is a well maintained house, now preserves the personal items of Gandhiji such as his round eye glasses, wooden sleepers, his personal letters, books and spinning wheel etc. The ashram has one museum known as “Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalay” which houses photographs, commentaries and other personal belongings of Gandhiji.

The colony was popularly known as Satyagraha Ashram or Harijan Ashram during Gandhiji’s period. It is the best example of human laboratory where Gandhiji had conveyed his moral hypothesis among thousands of his followers across the country. This is the place where Gandhiji with his band followers had started his historic Dandi March which ultimately culminated the era of “British Raj” in India. The light and sound show in the evening is an added attraction for the visitors. While you are in Ahmedabad, a visit to this historic site is a must.
